Mindset!

(the first step)

The first step in providing meaningful inclusion of all students is MINDSET. Teachers must have a positive outlook, and a positive disposition on engaging students who have special needs. Inclusion of students needs to be seen as an opportunity, not as a burden or chore. As a society we often get hung up on a single view of success, and brilliance. A positive mindset in inclusion forces society to broaden its horizons to realize the brilliance in everyone. The practice of inclusion not only benefits those who were previously left out, but it also benefits those who were already included. It creates a new platform for learning, inclusion can bring new perspectives, it can bring new ideas, and it can bring innovation. No one can consider himself or herself as being well rounded until they develop a positive disposition on inclusion, because inclusion is the driving force in being able to broaden horizons and think about the world from multiple perspectives. A teacher has to be enthusiastic about all of these possibilities that teaching in a inclusive environment can create.
