Referral Process
If a teacher has done all that they feel like they can do in terms of helping a student who is behind to catch back up on material, they can refer that child for special education services. The steps of the referral process are as follows:
Before you write the referral...
1. Analyze unmet needs- try simple interventions
2. Look for intensity, duration, and frequency of behavioral patterns in question
3. Communicate with parents, fellow teachers, and specialists at your school
4. Document evidence of behaviors in questions and your interventions to fix them
5. Engage intervention assistance team
6. Follow the steps of the RTI program if there is one in place at your school
What is a referral?
A referral is a written request for a student to be evaluated who may need special education services because of a suspected disability.
Who can write a referral?
A referral can be written by a teacher, a parent or guardian, school personnel, or a professional and it requires informed parental consent before a child can be evaluated for special education services.
